“A VOICE LIKE VELVET, KAMEELAH IS ALL JAZZ!” – Burlington County Cultural Heritage Arts Commission, 2005) describes vocalist Kameelah Samar. With Trinidad & Tobago roots she brings her jazz vocals to a new height; flavoring each mood with a touch of grace & elegance, from big band swing to the mellow tones of the most heart-felt ballad, infusing smooth soul, world-beats and Caribbean fusion. Her father is Trinidad & Tobago’s “Danny Boy” who rose to fame in the late 1960’s and 1970’s, having performed and placed in many National calypso competitions in Trinidad & Tobago (Danny Boy was always a featured performer in noted calypso tents for the legendary Kitchener, Blakie & the Mighty Sparrow).
At the age of 8, Kameelah played most woodwind instruments throughout her formative school years. When approaching the jazz classics, Kameelah often says “I hear the instruments first, and make a connection to the story that they are telling; the words come later.” She has graced the outdoor stages of many summer jazz festivals in the USA. Kameelah has worked and performed with many seasoned musicians from New York, Philadelphia to the Caribbean, in noted jazz clubs. Her collaborations include T&T’s pianist/arranger John-Wayne “Birdie” Kirton, Bassist & Musical Director Don “Sunshine” Diaz, Arranger/Producer Frankie McIntosh, Guitarists Neil McNamara, Drummer Craig Haynes, ace Trumpeter Errol Ince, Acclaimed vocalist Keith “Designer – KEET Styla” Prescott. She has written original material with Grammy nominated jazz musician William Cepeda of Puerto Rico.
At the 2015 Tobago Jazz Experience, Kameelah was the opening act for global headliner’s Jill Scott and Kool & the Gang. “The sound is soft, like the Isley Brothers sang, drifting not on a memory but rather on a melody. Kameelah Samar’s cool, breezy sound captured those gathered at the Tobago Jazz Experience (TJE).” May 2, 2015, Melissa Doughty (Trinidad & Tobago NewsDay). She’s penned lyrics to original songs for her own arrangements and is a recognized artist with ASCAP; with original copy-written works registered via the US Copyright office. She has completed a host of recordings of her original songs for the long-awaited of release COOL, BREEZY JAZZ (MYNT Music Publishing).
